Michell's professional acting debut came in 1947, when he appeared in the comedy "Lover's Leap" by Bill Daily at Adelaide's Playbox Theatre. He worked in radio for ABC in Adelaide before moving to Britain in 1949 to study at the Old Vic Theatre School.

Michell's extensive stage credits include appearances in "The Taming of the Shrew," "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "Troilus and Cressida," and "Romeo and Juliet" at Stratford-upon-Avon. He also played Henry Higgins in Pygmalion by Bernard Shaw on television in 1956.

In addition to his acting career, Michell was an accomplished illustrator, illustrating a collection of Jeremy Lloyd's poems, "Captain Beaky," and singing the title song from the associated album.
