Born on September 5, 1980, in Chorley, Lancashire, England, Simm developed a passion for music at a young age. He attended St. Annes Primary School and later St. Mary's Catholic Technology College in Leyland, where he performed Elton John's "Daniel" in the school's annual show.
Simm formed the indie-pop band AnAlien in 1996 and later applied to appear on the ITV talent show Stars in Their Eyes, where he impersonated Simon Fowler of Ocean Colour Scene. In 2000, he sang in the pop band Force 5 with James Fox.
