Born on December 8, 1952, in Penang, Malaysia, Khaw Boon Wan moved to Singapore in 1977 and began his career in the Singapore Civil Service. He worked at the Ministry of Health, National University Hospital, KK Womens and Childrens Hospital, and Singapore General Hospital, before serving as the Principal Private Secretary to Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong from 1992 to 1995.
Khaw's political career took off in 2001 when he was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Moulmein division of Tanjong Pagar GRC. He went on to serve as Senior Minister of State for Health, playing a key role in combating the SARS pandemic in 2003. His exceptional leadership during this period earned him a promotion to Minister for Health, a position he held from 2003 to 2011.
Khaw has received numerous awards for his public service, including the Public Service Star (2003), the Meritorious Service Medal (2009), and the Distinguished Service Order (2015).
