Born in Hamar, Norway, on July 12, 1895, Flagstad grew up in a musical family. Her father, Michael Flagstad, was a conductor, and her mother, Maja Flagstad, was a pianist. Her siblings, Ole, Lasse, and Karen-Marie, were also musicians. This rich musical environment paved the way for her early musical training in Oslo.
Flagstad made her stage debut at the National Theatre in 1913, singing the role of Nuri in Eugen d'Albert's Tiefland. She went on to make her first recordings between 1913 and 1915. In 1919, Flagstad married Sigurd Hall and gave birth to her only child, a daughter named Else Marie Hall. Flagstad's talent soon took her to the Stora Teatern of Gothenburg, Sweden, where she sang alongside notable artists like Leo Slezak. Her repertoire expanded to include roles like Desdemona, Minnie, and Amelia, cementing her position as a rising star in the operatic world.
Flagstad's triumphant debut in New York on February 2, 1935, marked a turning point in her career. Metropolitan Opera's General Manager, Giulio Gatti-Casazza, famously declared, "I have given America two great gifts – Caruso and Flagstad." This debut solidified her status as a world-class soprano, earning her the respect and admiration of critics and audiences alike.
Desmond Shawe-Taylor wrote in the New Grove Dictionary of Opera, "No one within living memory surpassed her in sheer beauty and consistency of line and tone." Flagstad's contributions to the world of opera are immeasurable, inspiring generations of singers and music lovers.
