He is perhaps best known for his remarkable stint as a player and manager with Doxa Drama, where he made a record 226 appearances in the Alpha Ethniki, now known as the Super League Greece.
Vasilakakis' career began in 1973 at the tender age of 16, when he signed a contract with Panthrakikos. In 1981, Vasilakakis transferred to Doxa Drama, where he spent 13 seasons in the Alpha Ethniki, making him one of the most capped players in the league's history. He remained with the team until the end of his playing career in 1995, at the age of 38.
After hanging up his boots, Vasilakakis turned to coaching, taking the reins at Panthrakikos F.C. from 2004 to 2008, with a brief hiatus during the 2006-2007 season. During this period, he led the team to three significant promotions, from the Delta Ethniki to the Super League Greece, earning him the distinction of being the most successful football manager in the club's history.
Vasilakakis also managed Doxa Drama F.C. during the 2008-2009 season, guiding them to a promotion from Gamma Ethniki to Beta Ethniki. In addition, he has coached several other teams, including Aris Photolivos, Pandramaikos F.C., and Kavala F.C.
