Russell's talents were soon recognized, and he was drafted by the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in the eighth round, 138th overall, in 2002. He made his NHL debut in 2007 and spent four seasons with the Blue Jackets before moving on to the St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames, and Dallas Stars.
