In 1953, Baker signed with Atlantic Records as a solo artist, releasing her first single, "Soul on Fire". Her breakthrough came in early 1955 with the Latin-tinged hit "Tweedle Dee", which reached number 4 on the R&B chart and number 14 on the national US pop chart, selling over one million copies.
This success was followed by hits like "Jim Dandy" (1956) and "I Cried a Tear" (1958), cementing Baker's status as a rhythm and blues icon. During this period, Elvis Presley recorded eight of her songs, further solidifying her influence on the genre.
Baker was a strong advocate for artists' rights, particularly when it came to copyright protection. Her vocal style and arrangement were often copied by other artists, including Georgia Gibbs, who reached number 1 with a cover of "Tweedle Dee". Baker attempted to sue Gibbs for $250,000, a move that sparked a national debate on copyright infringement and artistic ownership.
