Born on September 23, 1964, in Missoula, Montana, Krystkowiak's love for sports was ignited by his mother, Helen, who encouraged him to participate in various sports from a young age. Tragedy struck when his mother passed away due to Hodgkin's lymphoma when Krystkowiak was just eight years old. His father remarried, and his stepmother discouraged him from pursuing sports. At 15, Krystkowiak made the bold decision to move out of his home in Shelby, Montana, and finish his high school career at Big Sky High School in Missoula, where he lived with his older brother Bernie, who became his legal guardian.
During his college years, Krystkowiak played basketball for the University of Montana from 1982 to 1986. He was a phenomenal player, holding the school records for career points scored (2,017) and rebounds (1,105). His outstanding performance earned him the title of Big Sky Conference MVP three times (1984-1986), making him the only person to achieve this feat. In recognition of his accomplishments, the University of Montana retired his jersey number.
Krystkowiak's impressive college career caught the attention of the Chicago Bulls, who selected him in the second round (28th overall pick) of the 1986 NBA draft. He went on to play power forward for nine seasons in the NBA, spending most of his career with the Milwaukee Bucks. He also played for the San Antonio Spurs, Utah Jazz, Orlando Magic, Chicago Bulls, and Los Angeles Lakers.
In the 1988-1989 season, Krystkowiak averaged 12.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and over 30 minutes per game for the Bucks. Throughout his NBA career, he averaged 8.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per contest.
After retiring from professional basketball, Krystkowiak began his coaching career in 1998 as an assistant to Don Holst at the University of Montana, his alma mater. He coached at Montana until 2000, when he left to join Old Dominion as an assistant.
