Born Benjamin William Lattimore on September 7, 1939, in Charleston, Tennessee, Latimore grew up surrounded by the rich musical heritage of the American South. Influenced by country music, his Baptist church choir, and the blues, Latimore's early life was steeped in music. He began his professional career as a pianist for various Florida-based groups, including Steve Alaimo, before moving on to record his own material.
Latimore's big break came in 1973 with his jazzy reworking of T-Bone Walker's "Stormy Monday," which reached No. 27 on the R&B chart. This was followed by his first national hit, "If You Were My Woman," a gender-modified cover of the Pam Sawyer, Clay McMurray, and Gloria Jones song, which reached No. 70 on the R&B chart. However, it was his 1974 hit "Let's Straighten It Out" that catapulted Latimore to stardom, reaching No. 1 on the R&B chart and No. 31 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Throughout the 1970s, Latimore continued to release a string of hits, including "Keep the Home Fire Burnin'" (No. 5 R&B, 1975) and "Somethin' 'Bout Cha" (No. 7 R&B, 1976). He continued to evolve as an artist, experimenting with different styles and genres, and working with various labels, including Malaco Records and JTown Records. In the 2000s, Latimore collaborated with Henry Stone on a new record label, LatStone, and released an album with Mel Waiters' label, Brittney Records.
In addition to his solo work, Latimore has also had a successful career as a session pianist, working with a variety of artists, including Joss Stone. He appeared on her albums "The Soul Sessions" (2003) and "Mind Body & Soul" (2004), showcasing his versatility and skill as a musician.
