Born on October 7, 1986, in Texas, Nguyen graduated from Plano East Senior High School, where he was named the National Gatorade Boys Soccer High School Player of the Year in 2005. He then attended Indiana University, producing an impressive five goals and 12 assists in 22 games during his freshman year, earning him the titles of National Freshman of the Year by Soccer America and Soccer Times, as well as a first-team All-Big Ten selection and Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
Nuyen's professional career began with a three-and-a-half-year deal with Dutch Eredivisie team PSV Eindhoven in 2006. Although he made only two appearances with the senior team, he went on to sign with Danish Superliga club Randers FC in 2008, making 23 appearances in parts of two seasons.
