Born on 5 April 1919 in Dehiwela, Colombo, Ceylon, Lester James Peries was raised in a Roman Catholic family that had assimilated into British culture. His father, Dr. James Francis Peries, was a Scottish-educated doctor, and his mother, Ann Gertrude Winifred Jayasuria, was a graduate of St. Bridget's Convent, Colombo. Despite being anglicized, Peries' grandmother instilled in him a sense of Sinhalese culture and tradition.
At the age of 11, Peries received an 8mm Kodascope projector as a gift from his father, which sparked his fascination with films. He would often watch Chaplin's silent movies and later, along with his brother Ivan, haunt cinemas to watch foreign film serials.
Peries' filmmaking journey began in 1949, and he went on to create some of Sri Lanka's most iconic films, including Rekava, Gamperaliya, Nidhanaya, Golu Hadawatha, and Kaliyugaya. His masterpiece, Nidhanaya, was recognized as one of the top 100 films of the century by the Cinémathèque Française.
