Born on February 26, 1829, in Buttenheim, Kingdom of Bavaria, Germany, Strauss was the son of Hirsch Strauss and Rebecca Strauss (née Haas). He grew up in a Jewish family and was the youngest of seven children. In 1847, at the age of 18, Strauss traveled to the United States with his mother and two sisters to join his brothers, Jonas and Louis, who had established a wholesale dry goods business in New York City.
In 1853, Strauss became an American citizen and decided to open a West Coast branch of his brothers' dry goods business in San Francisco, which was the commercial hub of the California Gold Rush. Strauss imported fine dry goods from his brothers in New York, including clothing, bedding, combs, purses, and handkerchiefs. He set up his wholesale business, Levi Strauss & Co., and began selling his goods to miners and settlers.
In 1871, Strauss partnered with tailor Jacob W. Davis of Reno, Nevada, who had invented a way to strengthen work pants using rivets. Strauss and Davis received a patent for their innovative design, and their collaboration led to the mass production of riveted denim pants, later known as blue jeans.
