Born on 5 November 1937, in Jol, eastern Tibet, Lobsang Tenzin was recognized as the reincarnation of the 4th Samdhong Rinpoche at the tender age of five and enthroned in Gaden Dechenling Monastery. He began his monastic education at the age of seven and took vows as a monk, initiating his lifelong dedication to Buddhism.
Following the Tibet Rebellion in 1959, Lobsang Tenzin fled to India along with the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, and thousands of Tibetan refugees. He pursued his academic interests in India, completing his Lharampa degree in 1968 and Ngagrimpa degree in 1969. He went on to serve as a principal and religious teacher in various Tibetan schools, including the Central School for Tibetans in Dalhousie.
Lobsang Tenzin's academic brilliance and leadership skills propelled him to assume several prestigious positions. He served as the director of the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (CIHTS) in Varanasi from 1971 to 2001 and as the President of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) from 1994 to 1995.
