Lou Martin, a Belfast-born piano and organ virtuoso, left an indelible mark on the world of rock music. As an original member of the London-based band Killing Floor and a longtime collaborator with Irish guitar legend Rory Gallagher, Martin's soulful melodies and rhythmic mastery earned him a revered place in the hearts of music enthusiasts.
Martin's musical journey began at the tender age of six, when he started learning the piano. This early introduction to music would eventually lead him to join his first professional band, Killing Floor, in 1968. This move marked the beginning of Martin's illustrious career, which would see him rubbing shoulders with some of the most iconic names in rock history.
Martin's unique style was deeply rooted in the blues and rock 'n' roll traditions. His ability to craft infectious rhythms and melodies made him an in-demand session musician. His work with Rory Gallagher is particularly noteworthy, with Martin featuring on several of Gallagher's albums, including Blueprint, Tattoo, and Irish Tour '74.
After leaving Gallagher's band, Martin went on to explore various musical landscapes. He formed Ramrod with drummer Rod de'Ath, and later played with Downliners Sect and Screaming Lord Sutch. Martin's versatility also led him to tour with legends like Chuck Berry and Albert Collins. In the 1980s, he was part of the Nickey Barclay band, performing at iconic London venues like The White Lion and The Star and Garter.
In 2004, Martin reunited with Killing Floor to release the album Zero Tolerance. After battling illness, including cancer and strokes, Martin passed away on August 17, 2012, at the age of 63. Though his life was cut short, Martin's contributions to rock music continue to inspire and influence generations of musicians.
