Rod deAth: The Iconic Drummer Behind Rory Gallagher's Sound

Rod deAth, a Welsh musician, is best known for his role as the drummer for Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher in the 1970s. His unique technique and dedication to his craft helped shape Gallagher's sound, making him an integral part of the band during that era.

Career Highlights

DeAth's career took off when he was offered a temporary substitute role for Wilgar Campbell on a European tour in 1972. Campbell's permanent departure led to deAth joining the band full-time, and he stayed with Gallagher until 1978. During this period, deAth performed on several albums, including Tattoo, Blueprint, and Against the Grain.

A Unique Drumming Style

Gerry McAvoy, Gallagher's bass guitarist, described deAth as the most undrummerlike drummer I ever played with. His technique was so strange that it added a whole new dimension to Rory's sound. DeAth's unconventional approach to drumming brought a fresh perspective to Gallagher's music, making him a standout contributor to the band.

Later Career and Challenges

After leaving Gallagher's band, deAth went on to play with Ramrod, alongside keyboard player Lou Martin, and later with the Downliners Sect. In the mid-1980s, he returned to the UK to produce an album for Road Erect. However, a serious accident while running to catch a train resulted in the loss of one eye and some brain damage. Despite being told by doctors that his brain damage would be fatal within four years, deAth made a near-complete recovery, although he was no longer able to play drums.

After Gallagher's passing in 1995, many obituaries mistakenly claimed that deAth had also passed away. This led to deAth avoiding Gallagher's funeral, as he didn't want to contact friends only to inform them of his own supposed demise. DeAth eventually made an appearance at a memorial service a few months later, debunking the rumors.

Despite the challenges he faced, deAth's legacy as a drummer continues to inspire and influence musicians to this day. His unique style and contributions to Gallagher's music remain an integral part of rock history.
