Born Lucie Joanne Silverman on September 4, 1977, in Kingston upon Thames, England, Silvas grew up in a multicultural family with a father from New Zealand of Jewish descent and a Scottish mother who is Christian. This eclectic upbringing heavily influenced her musical style, which she began developing at a very young age. She learned to play the piano at five and wrote her first song by ten. In 2000, Silvas signed with EMI Records and released her debut single "It's Too Late," which peaked at number 62 on the UK Singles Chart. Although the single didn't quite reach the expected heights, it didn't deter Silvas from pursuing her passion. She continued writing and was soon signed by Chrysalis Records, an EMI subsidiary, as a songwriter. This opportunity led to her working with prominent British artists, including Sarah Whatmore, Will Young, Gareth Gates, Rachel Stevens, and Liberty X. Her songs for these artists became chart-toppers, further solidifying her reputation as a talented songwriter. Silvas' big break came in 2003 when she recorded a duet with Spanish singer Natalia called "This Time." The following year, she wrote the first single off Natalia's third album, "Sombras (Shadows)." Around the same time, Silvas signed a recording contract with Mercury Records and began working on her second album, , which was released in October 2004. Produced by Mike Peden, much of was co-written with Judie Tzuke, with whom Silvas had sung backing vocals for many years. became a critical and commercial success, earning Silvas numerous accolades, including a BBC Radio 2 commissioned radio show to track her progress.
