Luther Johnson, also known as Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson, was a renowned American blues singer and guitarist who left an indelible mark on the music world. With a career spanning over five decades, he is best known for his work as a member of Muddy Waters' band from 1972 to 1980, and his Grammy Award-winning contribution to the album Blues Explosion in 1985.
Born on April 11, 1939, in Itta Bena, Mississippi, Johnson moved to Chicago with his family in 1955. It was during the 1960s that he began to make a name for himself in the blues scene, performing with Magic Sam and other notable artists.
In the 1970s, Johnson's career gained momentum when he joined Muddy Waters' band, touring and recording with the blues legend for eight years. During this period, he also appeared in the iconic 1980 film The Blues Brothers, backing John Lee Hooker.
In the 1980s, Johnson launched his solo career, releasing several albums and winning a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album for Blues Explosion in 1985. He went on to record three albums with Telarc Records, including Slammin' on the West Side (1996), Got to Find a Way (1998), and Talkin' About Soul (2001).
Johnson lived in Antrim, New Hampshire, for many years before moving to Florida in 2017. He passed away on December 25, 2022, at the age of 83, leaving behind a legacy of blues excellence and a devoted wife, Lottie.
