He earned certificates in Arabic Language and Literature, Persian Language and Literature, Medieval History, and Turkish Islamic Art.

Coan's academic prowess earned him the top spot in the residency exam at Ankara's Classic Religious Turkish Texts Chair in 1960. He served as a secretary for two years and later became a member of the faculty editorial board. In 1965, he completed his PhD dissertation on the 15th-century poet Hatipolu Muhammad, solidifying his expertise in Turkish-Islamic literature. By 1973, he had become an Associate Professor and joined the University of Ankara's Turkish-Islamic Literature Department. He later taught at the College of Theology and the Sakarya Government Architecture and Engineering Academy.

In 1977, Coan began attending hadith chats with Mehmed Zahid Kotku, a prominent Naqshbandi leader. Upon Kotku's passing in 1980, Coan became the leader of the Skenderpaa Jamia of the Nakibendi-Khalidiyya order. He voluntarily retired from his academic positions in 1987, devoting himself to conferencing, publishing, and various corporate activities.
