Mara Flix Gerea, affectionately known as La Doña and Mara Bonita, was a Mexican actress and singer who reigned supreme during the 1940s and 1950s, becoming one of the most successful figures of Latin American cinema alongside Pedro Armendáriz and Dolores del Río.
Born on April 8, 1914, in Álamos, Sonora, Mexico, Mara de los Ángeles Flix Gerea was the daughter of Bernardo Flix Flores, a military officer and politician, and Josefina Gerea Rosas. She was the 12th of 16 siblings, with a close relationship with her brother Pablo.
Her beauty and charm soon caught attention, and at 17, she was crowned Beauty Queen at the University of Guadalajara. It was during this time that she met Enrique lvarez Alatorre, a salesman for Max Factor, and the two married in 1931.
Flix's entry into the film industry was swift, with her debut in the 1938 film "La casa de la Troya." Her breakthrough role came in 1943 with the film "Doña Bárbara," earning her the nickname La Doña. Her strong personality, elegance, and talent cemented her status as a leading lady of Mexican cinema.
She went on to star in 47 films made in Mexico, Spain, France, Italy, and Argentina, solidifying her position as one of the most beautiful and talented actresses of the Golden Age of Mexican cinema.

Flix married Agustín Lara, a renowned Mexican composer, in 1945. Lara composed the song "Mara Bonita" as a wedding gift, earning her the nickname Mara Bonita.
