Marcus Grnholm, affectionately known as "Magic Marcus" or "Bosse" in his native Finland, is a Finnish former rally and rallycross driver who has left an indelible mark on the world of motorsports. With an impressive tally of 30 rally wins and two World Rally Championships under his belt, Grnholm is widely regarded as one of the most successful WRC drivers of all time.
Born on February 5, 1968, Grnholm hails from a family of Swedish-speaking population of Finland lineage. His father, Ulf Uffe Grnholm, was an active rally driver in the late 1970s to early 1980s, winning two Finnish championships. Tragically, Ulf Grnholm's life was cut short in a fatal accident during a practice run in 1981, when Marcus was just 13 years old. Despite this, Marcus has always maintained that it was not his father who inspired him to take up rallying, but rather his cousin and fellow rally driver, Sebastian Lindholm.
In his teenage years, Grnholm was an avid motocross enthusiast, but a serious knee injury forced him to switch to boxing. It wasn't until later that he discovered his true passion for rallying, a decision that would change the course of his life forever.
Grnholm's rallying career got off to a flying start, with his first major victory coming in 1996 at the Swedish Rally. This was followed by a string of impressive performances, including wins at the Rally Finland and the Rally Australia. In 2000, Grnholm claimed his first World Rally Championship title, a feat he repeated in 2002.
After Peugeot withdrew from the World Rally Championship, Grnholm joined Ford for the 2006 season, finishing a close second in the drivers' world championship. He repeated this feat in 2007, ultimately retiring from rallying at the end of the season.
However, Grnholm's love for rallying proved too great, and he made a comeback to the championship in 2009, driving a private Subaru for a short period. In 2019, he competed in the World Rally Championship, driving a Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT-maintained Toyota Yaris under the GRX Team banner.
Grnholm is married and has two children, including his son, Niclas Grnholm, who is an upcoming FIA World Rallycross Championship driver. When not behind the wheel, Grnholm enjoys spending time with his family and indulging in his passion for motocross.
