Margaret Okayo is a renowned Kenyan marathon runner, celebrated for her impressive victories in four World Marathon Majors, setting three course records that still stand today. Her remarkable achievements in the New York City Marathon, Boston Marathon, and London Marathon have etched her name in the annals of athletics history.
Born on May 30, 1976, Okayo's passion for running was ignited during her primary school days. She continued to nurture her talent at the Itierio Secondary School, eventually graduating in 1993. Her athletic prowess caught the attention of the Kenya Prisons Service, which recruited her in 1995, providing her with the ideal platform to hone her skills.
Okayo's breakthrough came at the 1998 Commonwealth Games, where she finished fifth in the 10,000 meters. This was followed by a 13th place finish at the 1999 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. Her determination and perseverance paid off when she won the San Diego Marathon in 2000 and 2001, setting the stage for her future triumphs.
