Margus Tsahkna is a name synonymous with Estonian politics, currently leading the liberal Estonia 200 party since November 2023. This seasoned politician has had a storied career, serving as the Minister of Defence and Minister of Social Protection, and is now the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the third cabinet of Kaja Kallas.
Tsahkna's academic pursuits laid the foundation for his future in politics. Born in Tartu, Estonia in 1977, he graduated high school in 1995 and went on to study theology and law at the University of Tartu from 1996 to 2002. He also had a stint at the University of Toronto, where he studied international law from 1999 to 2000.
Tsahkna's political journey began in 2000 when he joined the Pro Patria party. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming chairman of NoorIsamaa, the party's youth organisation, from 2001 to 2004. This was followed by a stint as a member of Tartu city council from 2001 to 2003, and later as the party's political secretary from 2003 to 2006.
As the Pro Patria and Res Publica parties merged to form the Pro Patria ja Res Publica Liit party, Tsahkna took on the role of secretary general from 2007 to 2010, and then as political secretary from 2010 to 2013. His leadership capabilities were evident when he became the assistant chairman in 2013.
Tsahkna's commitment to his community is undeniable. In 2000, he founded the Christian Adolescent Home in Tartu, a testament to his dedication to social causes. He is also a member of the General Johan Laidoner Society and the Korp Sakala student society.
Who would have thought that this Estonian politician has a hidden talent for singing? Tsahkna won second place in the Estonian television singing competition Laulud tähtedega (Singing with Stars) in 2009, where he sang with Birgit Øigemeel, the winner of Eesti otsib superstaari (Estonia's Got Talent).
In 2015, Tsahkna was re-elected to the parliament with 2,267 individual votes, a testament to his popularity among the Estonian people. He was chosen as the chairman of the Pro Patria and Res Publica Union on June 6, 2015.
As Tsahkna continues to make his mark on Estonian politics, his dedication to public service and commitment to his community are qualities that set him apart. With a storied career spanning over two decades, Tsahkna's legacy is only just beginning to take shape.
