A Swedish princess who married into German royalty, known for her cultural and artistic patronage, particularly in the fields of music and literature.
Maria Euphrosyne of Zweibrücken was a countess palatine, cousin, and foster sister of Queen Christina of Sweden, and sister of King Charles X of Sweden. She was also a titular Royal Princess of Sweden after her brother's accession to the throne in 1654, making her a prominent figure in Swedish royalty.
Maria Euphrosyne was born on February 14, 1625, at Stegeborg Castle, Östergötland, Sweden, to Count Palatine John Casimir of Zweibrücken and Princess Catherine of Sweden. After her family fled from Germany during the Thirty Years' War, they settled in Sweden, where Maria Euphrosyne spent her early years at Stegeborg Castle.
She received a good education, initially alongside her cousin Queen Christina, but was later tutored separately due to the different educational requirements for a monarch. This education prepared her for her future roles in the royal court.
In 1643, Maria Euphrosyne received a marriage proposal from Count Henry of Nassau, but her father was uncertain about Henry's ability to support her. Eventually, Queen Christina arranged her marriage to Count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie, one of the Queen's favorites, on March 7, 1647, at the Royal Chapel of Tre Kronor Castle in Stockholm.
This marriage solidified her connections to the Swedish royal court and further cemented her position as a titular Royal Princess of Sweden.
Maria Euphrosyne's life was deeply intertwined with that of her cousin Queen Christina, and she played an important role in the royal court during Christina's reign. Her marriage to Count De la Gardie produced several children, further expanding her family's influence in Sweden.
Although her life was marked by her connections to the royal court, Maria Euphrosyne remains an important figure in Swedish history, representing the complex web of relationships and alliances that shaped the country's royalty during the 17th century.
