Martn Herrera: The Argentine Goalkeeper Who Made a Mark in European Football

Martn Herrera is a former Argentine professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper and made a name for himself in European football. He is best known for his impressive stint with Spanish club Deportivo Alavs, where he won the Ricardo Zamora Trophy and helped the team reach the final of the UEFA Cup.

Early Life and Club Career

Martn Horacio Herrera was born on September 13, 1970, in Ro Cuarto, Crdoba, Argentina. He started his senior career with Boca Juniors in 1991, after signing from his local club Estudiantes de Ro Cuarto. However, his time at Boca Juniors was cut short due to a severe injury he sustained in a reserve game against Club Atltico Independiente, which sidelined him for nine months.

Herrera then embarked on a journeyman career, playing for several clubs including Club Atltico Atlanta, Deportivo Toluca FC of Mexico, and Ferro Carril Oeste. His experience with Ferro Carril Oeste was marked by a dispute over unpaid wages, which led to his departure from the club.

Breakthrough with Deportivo Alavs

In 1999, Herrera signed with Spanish La Liga club Deportivo Alavs, where he found success and stability. In his first season, he was an undisputed starter and won the Ricardo Zamora Trophy, conceding only 37 goals in 38 matches. This impressive performance helped Alavs qualify for the UEFA Cup.

The following season, Herrera continued to be first choice for the Basques, but was briefly suspended by the Royal Spanish Football Federation for allegedly holding a false Italian passport. However, he was able to prove his origins and helped his team reach the final of the UEFA Cup in 2001, where they lost to Liverpool in extra time.

Fulham and Later Career

In 2002, Herrera signed with Fulham of the English Premier League. Although he was a backup to Edwin van der Sar and Maik Taylor, he made his Premier League debut in 2003 as a substitute against Tottenham Hotspur. Herrera's second and final competitive appearance for Fulham took place in March 2003, when he started against Chelsea.

After his stint with Fulham, Herrera's career began to wind down, and he eventually retired from professional football.

Martn Herrera's career may not have been filled with trophies and accolades, but he made a mark in European football with his impressive performances and determination. His legacy serves as an inspiration to young goalkeepers around the world.
