Adrian was educated at the Portora Royal School in Enniskillen, where he shared the same alma mater as Oscar Wilde and Samuel Beckett.

Adrian began his career as a chorus boy in a silent movie theatre, eventually making his stage debut in the chorus of Katja the Dancer in 1925. He went on to tour with Lady Be Good and The Blue Train, before making his West End debut in The Squall at the Globe Theatre in 1927.
