Born on August 3, 1920, at Narma private hospital in Adelaide, Fatchen grew up on an Adelaide Plains farm in Angle Vale, where he developed a passion for words and storytelling. He learned to drive a team of Clydesdale horses and later attended Gawler High School, where he would drive his horse and buggy once a week to have his papers corrected.
Fatchen began his journalism career as a copy boy, before serving in the Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force during World War II. Post-war, he became a journalist with The News and later The Advertiser, covering numerous major stories in Australia and abroad.
Fatchen's writing career for children, which commenced in 1966, was marked by the publication of 'The River Kings'. This was followed by a string of successful novels and poetry collections, including 'Just Fancy That', which remains a favorite among young readers. His works have been published in seven countries, and his poetry has been widely acclaimed across the English-speaking world.
