Collins was born into a family of musicians, with his mother, Bebe Collins, being a singer and his father, Derek Collins, a saxophonist and session musician who toured with legendary artists like Judy Garland and Shirley Bassey. During his initial stint, he appeared on several albums, including In the Wake of Poseidon, Lizard, Islands, and Earthbound. He also contributed to the album Red as a session musician in 1974.

Camel and Other Ventures

In addition to his work with King Crimson, Collins has been a member of the progressive rock band Camel and has played with The Alan Parsons Project. He has also been part of the Crimson Jazz Trio, contributing to their second album, The King Crimson Songbook, Volume Two, released in 2009.
