Mel Galley, born Melville John Galley on March 8, 1948, is best known for his remarkable guitar playing skills and his work with iconic bands such as Whitesnake, Trapeze, Finders Keepers, and Phenomena. Despite facing a debilitating injury that could have ended his career, Galley persevered and continued to make significant contributions to the music world.
Born in Cannock, Staffordshire, Galley's early life was marked by a strong passion for music. He began his musical journey as a member of the band Finders Keepers, before moving on to Trapeze, where he played alongside his brother Tom Galley.
Galley's big break came when he joined Whitesnake, a British rock band led by David Coverdale. During his time with the band, Galley played on the album Saints & Sinners, which featured the hit single "Don't Break My Heart Again." However, his time with Whitesnake was cut short when he suffered a serious injury to his arm in an accident at a German fairground.
The accident left Galley with nerve damage, making it impossible for him to play the guitar in the conventional manner. Refusing to give up, Galley worked with a team of engineers to develop a specially designed spring and wire device called "The Claw," which allowed him to continue playing the guitar.
Galley's determination and resilience paid off when he co-founded the band Phenomena with his brother Tom and Wilfried Rimensberger. The band released several successful albums, with Galley's songwriting and guitar playing skills playing a major role in their success.
In 2008, Galley revealed that he was suffering from oesophageal cancer and had only a short time to live. Despite this devastating diagnosis, Galley remained optimistic and reflective, stating, "I have been very lucky. I have seen some great bands, and played with many great musicians. And I have enjoyed some tremendous experiences. I am thankful that I can say a proper goodbye to all the friends I have made, who are now rallying round me." Galley passed away on July 1, 2008, at the age of 60.
