Allenby's military career took him to Malaya, where he served between 1953 and 1956, and later to Hong Kong, where he was brigade major of the 51st Brigade from 1967 to 1969. He also commanded the Territorial Army Royal Yeomanry from 1974 to 1977. After inheriting the title of Viscount Allenby in 1984, he served as Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords from 1993 to 1999, earning a reputation as a fair and impartial leader.
