Born on March 26, 1966, in Mount Vernon, New York, Imperioli grew up in a family of actors. His parents, a bus driver and an amateur actor, and a department store worker and amateur actress, instilled in him a passion for the performing arts from a young age. After moving to Brewster, New York, at the age of 11, Imperioli began watching Broadway plays in high school, which sparked his desire to pursue a career in acting.
Imperioli graduated from Brewster High School in 1983 and initially planned to study premed at the State University of New York at Albany. However, he confided in his parents that he wanted to become an actor, and at the age of 17, he moved to Manhattan's East Village to enroll at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. It was here that he met John Ventimiglia, who would later play Artie Bucco on The Sopranos, and the two became roommates.
Imperioli's early career saw him take on supporting roles in films such as Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas (1990), Jungle Fever (1991), and Bad Boys (1995). He also appeared in The Basketball Diaries (1995) and Shark Tale (2004). In addition to his acting work, Imperioli co-wrote the screenplay for Summer of Sam (1999) with Spike Lee and wrote five episodes of The Sopranos.
In 2008, Imperioli made his directorial feature film debut with The Hungry Ghosts, which he also wrote. More recently, he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Dominic Di Grasso in the second season of HBO Max's The White Lotus (2022). Imperioli made his Broadway debut in the revival of the Henrik Ibsen play An Enemy of the People in 2024.
Imperioli has been married to Victoria Chlebowski since 1996, and they have three children together. In his free time, Imperioli enjoys playing music and is the lead vocalist of the New Jersey-based band, La Dolce Vita. Imperioli is also involved in various charitable initiatives, including supporting the American Cancer Society and the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
