Michael Ray, born December 24, 1952, is a renowned American jazz trumpeter known for his eclectic style, blending funk, jazz, R&B, electronica, and fusion genres. As a member of the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra and Kool & the Gang, Ray has left an indelible mark on the music world.
Originally from Trenton, New Jersey, Ray began his professional career performing with R&B acts such as Patti LaBelle, The Delfonics, and The Stylistics. In 1978, he joined Sun Ra's band, embarking on a journey that would shape his unique sound and style.
Ray's work with Sun Ra resulted in numerous album appearances on prominent labels such as Saturn Records, Evidence, Enja, and HatHut. He also mixed Sun Ra's last studio session, Mayan Temples, released on Black Saint in 1992. In 1989, Ray moved to New Orleans and established the Cosmic Krewe, releasing records in the 1990s and 2000s under his leadership.
In addition to his work with the Sun Ra Arkestra and the Cosmic Krewe, Ray has collaborated with a diverse range of artists, including Phish, Galactic drummer Stanton Moore, and avant-rockers Iris May Tango.
