In 2005, he represented a minor ice hockey team from Mauricie in the prestigious Quebec International PeeWee Hockey Tournament. His exceptional skills and dedication earned him a spot in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), where he was drafted seventh overall by the Shawinigan Cataractes in the 2008 QMJHL Entry Draft.

On March 17, 2018, during a game against the Laval Rocket, Bournival suffered a torn ACL, requiring surgery and forcing him to miss the remainder of the 2017-2018 season. Although he faced setbacks, Bournival persevered and signed a one-year extension with the Tampa Bay Lightning on April 19, 2018.
