Greek hip hop pioneer known for his energetic flow and socially conscious lyrics, blending traditional Greek music with modern hip hop elements.
Michalis Kouinelis, born on March 22, 1979, is widely recognized as the pioneering Greek rapper and lead singer of the hip-hop group Stavento. With a career spanning over two decades, Kouinelis has left an indelible mark on the Greek music industry, earning him a reputation as one of the most influential figures in Greek hip-hop.
Kouinelis' journey in music began in 1997 with his first discography work with the group Babylon on their album "Arhi Epi Telous". He continued to work with Babylon, contributing to their subsequent albums "Kouarteto ton stihion" and "Epi telous". His collaboration with Active Member on the album "Meres Thavmasies, Paraxenes Meres" further cemented his presence in the Greek hip-hop scene.
In a quest to create something truly unique and reflective of his artistic vision, Kouinelis founded Stavento, a hip-hop group that would become synonymous with his name. As the brainchild of Kouinelis, Stavento allowed him to take creative control, handling production, writing lyrics, and performing. This autonomy enabled him to inject his distinct style and energy into the group's music, resulting in a distinctive sound that resonated with fans.
In 2014, Kouinelis made his foray into television, becoming a coach on the Greek reality show "The Voice of Greece" on ANT1. This exposure further solidified his status as a household name, introducing him to a broader audience and reinvigorating interest in his music.
Kouinelis' personal life has been subject to media scrutiny, particularly his relationship with singer Ivi Adamou. Initially, Adamou denied rumors of their romantic relationship, but in 2014, Kouinelis revealed that they had been together since 2013. The couple now resides in Alexandroupoli with their daughter, living a relatively private life despite their public personas.
Throughout his career, Michalis Kouinelis has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to his artistic vision, forging a path that has inspired countless Greek hip-hop artists. As the lead singer of Stavento, he continues to push the boundaries of Greek hip-hop, leaving an enduring mark on the music industry.
