Paul Mellor is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer renowned for his lightning-fast speed and agility on the wing, playing 17 seasons at the highest level and scoring an impressive 90 tries in 221 NRL games.
Mellor's rugby league journey began with the Matraville Tigers Club in Sydney's South District Junior Rugby Football League. He made history as the youngest Rabbitoh in history, debuting for South Sydney at just 16 years and 10 months in 1991.
Mellor played for four different Sydney NRL clubs – South Sydney, Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks – and Castleford in the UK. He finished as South Sydney's top try scorer in the 1994 and 1996 seasons. One of his most notable achievements was winning the 1994 Tooheys Challenge Cup final with South Sydney, defeating Brisbane in an upset victory.
During his stint with Cronulla, Mellor was part of the 1999 side that won the minor premiership. Although they were favourites to win the competition, they suffered a heart-breaking loss to rivals St George in the preliminary final.
In 2003, Mellor signed with Castleford for two seasons, playing in the centre and second row before moving to the wing and improving his form. He played his final game of Rugby League in the 2007 Qualifying Final against the Manly Sea Eagles, retiring from the game at the conclusion of the 2007 season.
After retiring from playing, Mellor took up refereeing and now regularly appears as the video referee in NRL matches. His experience and expertise have made him a valuable asset to the rugby league community.
