Star of the popular 1970s TV series "Alias Smith and Jones," playing the charming outlaw Hannibal Heyes, and known for his rugged good looks and charismatic on-screen presence.
Pete Duel, born Peter Ellstrom Deuel, was an American stage, television, and film actor, best known for his starring role as outlaw Hannibal Heyes alias Joshua Smith in the television series Alias Smith and Jones. With his rugged good looks and effortless charm, Duel brought to life the character of Hannibal Heyes, capturing the hearts of audiences across the nation.
Born on February 24, 1940, in Rochester, New York, Duel was the eldest of three children to Dr. Ellsworth and Lillian Deuel. His brother Geoffrey Deuel, also an actor, would go on to appear in numerous television shows and films. Duel's early interest in acting was encouraged by his family, and he attended Penfield High School, where he was an active member of the National Thespians Society.
After graduating in 1957, Duel attended St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, where he majored in English. It was during his college years that Duel's passion for acting truly took hold, and he began to prioritize his roles in the drama department's productions over his academic studies. When his father witnessed his son's talent in a production of The Rose Tattoo, he urged Duel to pursue a career in acting.
Moving to New York City, Duel landed a role in a touring production of the comedy Take Her, She's Mine. He then drove across the country to Hollywood, California, with his mother, determined to make a name for himself in the film industry. Duel's early television appearances included guest roles in comedies such as Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. and dramas like Channing, Combat, and Bonanza.
In 1965, Duel was cast as Gidget's brother-in-law, John Cooper, in the comedy series Gidget, appearing in 22 of the show's 32 episodes. After Gidget's cancellation, Duel was quickly offered the starring role of Dave Willis in the romantic comedy series Love on a Rooftop.
However, it was his starring role as Hannibal Heyes in Alias Smith and Jones that brought Duel his greatest success. The show, which aired from 1971 to 1973, followed the adventures of two outlaws in the Wild West, and Duel's charisma and chemistry with co-star Ben Murphy helped make the show a fan favorite.
Tragically, Duel's life was cut short when he died on December 31, 1971, at the age of 31. Despite his untimely passing, Duel's legacy lives on through his memorable performances, and he remains a beloved figure in the history of American television.
Pete Duel's impact on popular culture is still felt today, with his iconic portrayal of Hannibal Heyes influencing generations of actors and filmmakers. His legacy serves as a reminder of the power of talent, dedication, and passion, inspiring countless individuals to pursue their dreams in the entertainment industry.
