In 1782, he was watch officer on HMS Royal George when it suddenly sank at Spithead, resulting in the loss of over 800 lives, including Admiral Kempenfelt's. Durham's quick thinking and bravery saved his life, as he jumped overboard and swam to safety.
In the following years, Durham filled a lieutenant's vacancy on HMS Union, participating in further service at the siege of Gibraltar and later making cruises to the West Indies and the African coast on HMS Raisonnable. His fluency in French, acquired during his two-year stay in France, became a valuable asset in his naval career.
In 1790, Durham's promotion to Commander came on November 2, with command of HMS Daphne. He later moved to HMS Cygnet in 1791 and took command of the small sloop HMS Spitfire on February 12, 1793.
