After serving in the military during World War II, he continued his studies at the Fine Arts School of Montpellier. It was during this period that Soulages discovered his true calling – abstract art. He opened a studio in Courbevoie, Paris, where he began to experiment with the color black, pushing the boundaries of what was considered conventional art.
