Pinchas Zukerman is a world-renowned Israeli-American violinist, violist, and conductor, celebrated for his mesmerizing performances and innovative approach to classical music. With a career spanning over five decades, Zukerman has left an indelible mark on the music world, earning him a place among the most esteemed musicians of our time.
Born on July 16, 1948, in Tel Aviv, Israel, to Jewish parents and Holocaust survivors Yehuda and Miriam Lieberman Zukerman, Pinchas began his musical journey at the tender age of four on the recorder. His father, a clarinetist, later introduced him to the instrument, followed by the violin at eight years old. Zukerman's early studies took place at the Samuel Rubin Academy of Music (now the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music) in Israel.
In 1962, the legendary violinist Isaac Stern and cellist Pablo Casals discovered Zukerman's exceptional talent during a visit to Israel. This encounter led to an invitation to study at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City under the guidance of Stern and Ivan Galamian. Zukerman made his New York City debut in 1963, marking the beginning of a remarkable career.
Zukerman's outstanding talent earned him the Leventritt Prize in 1967, which he shared with Korean violinist Kyungwha Chung. This prestigious award was followed by a successful recording career, with over 110 releases to date.
In 1970, Zukerman ventured into conducting, making his debut with the English Chamber Orchestra. He went on to serve as director of London's South Bank Festival from 1971 to 1974. In the United States, he held positions as music director of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra (1980-1987) and the summer festivals of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (1991-1995) and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (1996-1999). In 1999, he became Music Director of Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra (NACO), a position he held until 2015.
Zukerman is a dedicated educator, currently serving on the faculty at the Manhattan School of Music. In 1999, he founded the Zukerman Performance Program at the school, nurturing the talents of numerous young musicians, including Koh Gabriel Kameda, Julian Rachlin, and Guy Braunstein.
