A professional goalie who played in the NHL, winning the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2013 and known for his tough, rugged playing style.
Ray Emery, also known as "Razor" or "Sugar Ray," was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for eleven seasons, between 2003 and 2015. He is best known for his aggressive playing style and his impressive career achievements, including winning the Stanley Cup championship with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2013.
Emery was born on September 28, 1982, in Hamilton, Ontario, to Sharlene and her biological father. However, his biological father showed no interest in raising him, and Emery was later adopted by Paul Emery, whom his mother married in 1986. He had two younger brothers, Andrew and Nicholas, and grew up in a century-old farmhouse near the town of Cayuga.
Emery excelled in school and was offered a scholarship. He played various sports, including golf, baseball, and soccer, before focusing on ice hockey. Initially, he played as a defenseman, but switched to goaltender at the age of nine due to a shortage of goalies in his league.
Emery was chosen 99th overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. During the 2006-2007 season, he gained the starting job and backstopped his team to the Stanley Cup Finals, the first appearance in the finals for the modern Senators franchise.
Although he lost his place as the team's starting goaltender due to an injury in the subsequent season, Emery went on to play for the Philadelphia Flyers, Anaheim Ducks, and Chicago Blackhawks. In 2013, he won the William M. Jennings Trophy along with teammate Corey Crawford, awarded to the goaltender or goaltenders who give up the fewest goals in the season.
Emery's aggressive playing style earned him the respect of his teammates and fans, who often referred to him as "Razor" or "Sugar Ray." He was known for his dedication and perseverance, which made him a twotime Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy finalist.
Sadly, Emery's life was cut short on July 15, 2018, when he drowned while swimming in Lake Ontario. He was 35 years old. Emery's legacy continues to inspire young hockey players, and his fearlessness and passion for the game will always be remembered.
Ray Emery may have left us too soon, but his impact on the hockey world will never be forgotten. His fearless playing style, impressive career achievements, and dedication to the game continue to inspire and motivate hockey players and fans alike.
