In 1936, Jones joined the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, as a part of the Air Ministry, where he worked on defending Britain from air attacks and supporting the liberation of Europe from the Nazis. In September 1939, he became the first scientist to work in the Intelligence section of the Air Ministry, eventually rising to become Assistant Director of Intelligence Science.
