Born on September 3, 1938, in Marylebone, London, MacCormac was the son of Dr. Henry MacCormac, a dermatologist of Ulster origin, and Marion Maude MacCormac. His paternal lineage boasted a prominent medical dynasty in Northern Ireland, with connections to notable figures such as Dr. William MacCormac, a physician to Queen Victoria and King Edward VII.
After serving in the Royal Navy, MacCormac pursued his passion for architecture at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he achieved a double first. He then attended the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, to further hone his skills. MacCormac began his career working on social housing projects for the London Borough of Merton, eventually founding MacCormac Jamieson and Prichard in 1972.
