Zedník's journey to the NHL began in 1994, when he was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the tenth round, 249th overall, after playing junior hockey for the Portland Winter Hawks of the Western Hockey League (WHL).
During his rookie year with the Winter Hawks, Zedník scored an impressive 35 goals, setting the stage for a remarkable sophomore season. In 1995-1996, he notched 44 goals, earning him Second Team All-Star honors and cementing his position as a rising star in the WHL.
Zedník made his professional debut at the end of the 1995-1996 season, playing in a single game with the Capitals before joining their minor league affiliate, the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League (AHL), for their Calder Cup finals playoff run.
