Rob Waring is a renowned American-Norwegian composer and performer, celebrated for his mastery of the drums and vibraphone, as well as his work with symphony orchestras and jazz ensembles. With a career spanning over four decades, Waring has established himself as a luminary in the world of contemporary music.
Born on December 3, 1956, in Yonkers, New York, Waring's fascination with music began at a young age. He studied percussion with Roland Kohloff, who had just become timpanist of the New York Philharmonic, while still in high school. This early mentorship laid the foundation for his future success.
Waring went on to attend the Juilliard School, where he earned his Bachelor and Master of Music Degrees in percussion, studying under the tutelage of Saul Goodman and Elden Buster Bailey between 1974 and 1979. During this period, he also took elective courses in composition with Stanley Wolfe and studied jazz vibraphone with Dave Samuels in 1975.
In the early 1980s, Waring began his career as a freelance musician in New York, working with symphony orchestras, jazz groups, ensembles for new music, and an experimental ensemble for homemade instruments. This eclectic experience prepared him for the diverse range of projects he would later undertake.
In 1981, Waring made the pivotal decision to move to Oslo, Norway, where he has since become an integral part of the country's vibrant music scene. In 1987, he formed the Rob Waring Trio with Frank Jakobsen and Carl Morten Iversen, cementing his reputation as a composer and performer.
In addition to his performance career, Waring has shared his expertise as a teacher at Norges Musikkhgskole. He has also collaborated with numerous artists, contributing to a wide range of recordings and projects. Some notable collaborations include working with Syr, Erik Wllo, Espen Rud, Torgrim Sollid, Rune Klakegg, and many others.
