Waring went on to attend the Juilliard School, where he earned his Bachelor and Master of Music Degrees in percussion, studying under the tutelage of Saul Goodman and Elden Buster Bailey between 1974 and 1979. During this period, he also took elective courses in composition with Stanley Wolfe and studied jazz vibraphone with Dave Samuels in 1975.

In the early 1980s, Waring began his career as a freelance musician in New York, working with symphony orchestras, jazz groups, ensembles for new music, and an experimental ensemble for homemade instruments. This eclectic experience prepared him for the diverse range of projects he would later undertake.

In 1981, Waring made the pivotal decision to move to Oslo, Norway, where he has since become an integral part of the country's vibrant music scene. In 1987, he formed the Rob Waring Trio with Frank Jakobsen and Carl Morten Iversen, cementing his reputation as a composer and performer.
