Robb Allen Nen, a former Major League Baseball relief pitcher, is best known for his exceptional closing skills, earning him a World Series championship with the Florida Marlins in 1997. With 314 career saves, Nen is remembered as one of the most formidable closers of the 1990s, standing 25th overall in career saves as of September 13, 2023.
Nen attended Los Alamitos High School, where he played varsity baseball alongside future UCLA Bruins outfielder Rob Katzaroff and future Giants Gold Glove-winning first baseman J.T. Snow. During his high school career, Nen primarily played third base, but also showcased his pitching skills.
The Texas Rangers selected Nen as a pitcher in the 32nd round of the 1987 MLB draft. He made his Major League debut with the Rangers in 1993, but his partial season was marred by injuries and subpar results, resulting in a 6.35 earned run average. On July 17, 1993, the Rangers traded Nen and pitcher Kurt Miller to the Florida Marlins for Cris Carpenter.
In 1994, the Marlins moved Nen to the bullpen, reducing the frequency of his arm injuries. This change proved to be a turning point in his career, as Nen flourished in his new role, becoming the Marlins' new closer that year. He finished the strike-shortened 1994 season with 15 saves and a 2.95 ERA.
After retiring from professional baseball, Nen joined the San Francisco Giants' front office as a special assistant to General Manager Farhan Zaidi. He continues to be involved in the baseball world, utilizing his expertise to support the Giants' organization.
