Known for his versatility on the field, Espinoza played as a midfielder or defender, representing his country in two World Cups and the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Espinoza's journey to football stardom began when he emigrated from Honduras to the United States at the age of twelve. He attended Denver South High School before transferring to Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colorado. Espinoza's college career was marked by impressive performances, playing two years of college soccer at Yavapai College and one season with the Arizona Sahuaros of the National Premier Soccer League in 2006.
In 2007, Espinoza transferred to Ohio State, where he spent one season, helping the team reach the national championship game of the College Cup. His impressive performance earned him a spot on the NCAA College Cup All-Tournament Team, as well as recognition as a first-team All-Big Ten and second-team all-region player.
Espinoza opted to forgo his senior year of college and signed a Generation Adidas contract with Major League Soccer. He was selected with the 11th overall pick of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft by the Kansas City Wizards, now known as Sporting Kansas City.
During his five-year stint with Sporting Kansas City, Espinoza appeared in 113 regular season matches, helping the team win the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. His impressive performances caught the attention of European clubs, and in 2012, he signed with Wigan Athletic of the English Premier League on a free transfer.
