Roxana Briban was a renowned Romanian operatic soprano known for her captivating liricospinto voice, which allowed her to master a wide range of roles in various operas. Born on October 28, 1971, in Bucharest, Romania, Briban's passion for music began at a tender age of six, when she started singing and playing the violin.
Briban's early interest in music led her to become a soloist of the Romanian Radio Children's Choir, with which she performed over 300 concerts in Romania and abroad. She attended the prestigious George Enescu Music High School in Bucharest, graduating in 1995. Later, she earned a degree from the National University of Music Bucharest, where she received awards from the Romanian Musical Forum and the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Company SRR.
Briban made her debut as a soloist with the Romanian National Opera, Bucharest in 2000, playing the role of the Countess in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro. Her international debut followed in 2003, when she performed as Micala in Bizet's Carmen at the Vienna State Opera. She went on to appear at the Vienna State Opera until her final season in 2009-2010, taking on roles such as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Mimi in La Bohème, Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly, Amelia Grimaldi in Simon Boccanegra, and Tatiana in Eugene Onegin.
Briban's liricospinto soprano voice enabled her to effortlessly transition between various roles, including Leila in The Pearl Fishers, Micala in Carmen, Elena and Margherita in Mefistofele, the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro, Donna Elvira and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Violetta Valéry in La Traviata, Alice Ford in Falstaff, Amelia Grimaldi in Simon Boccanegra, and Aida in Aida, Elisabetta de Valois in Don Carlo, Leonora in Il Trovatore, as well as Mimi in La Bohème and Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly. Her repertoire also included vocalsymphonic works by renowned composers such as Bach, Handel, Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Mahler, Shostakovich, and Hindemith.
Briban's final public appearance took place at the Royal Palace in Warsaw, Poland. Her untimely passing on November 20, 2010, left a void in the world of opera, but her legacy continues to inspire and captivate audiences around the globe.
