An Italian-American mob boss who founded the Five Families of New York City and established the modern Mafia hierarchy. He's infamous for his role in the Castellammarese War and his brutal tactics.
Maranzano had ambitions to become a priest, and he even studied to become one. However, it was not to be, and he eventually became associated with the Mafia in his homeland. This association would define his life and ultimately lead to his demise.
Maranzano's ambition and cunning eventually led him to instigate the Castellammarese War in 1930, a brutal and bloody conflict that would ultimately lead to his rise as the boss of all bosses. The war was sparked by Maranzano's desire to seize control of the American Mafia, and it would claim the lives of many high-ranking Mafiosi, including rival faction head Joe Masseria.
However, Maranzano's reign was short-lived, and he was ultimately betrayed and murdered on September 10, 1931, on the orders of Charles "Lucky" Luciano. Luciano, who would go on to establish The Commission, a governing body that shared power among the families and prevented future turf wars, was instrumental in Maranzano's downfall.
Despite his brutal and often ruthless tactics, Maranzano was deeply respected by his underworld peers for his intelligence, cunning, and commanding presence. His fascination with Julius Caesar and the Roman Empire, which earned him the nickname "Little Caesar," adds a layer of complexity to his persona, highlighting the contradictions and nuances of his character.
