Canadian cross-country skier who won Olympic silver and bronze medals, and is a three-time World Championship medalist.
Sara Renner is a renowned Canadian cross-country skier, celebrated for her remarkable career spanning over 15 years, including her triumphant silver medal win in the team sprint event at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, alongside teammate Beckie Scott.
Born on April 10, 1976, in Golden, British Columbia, Renner grew up in a remote area of the Canadian Rockies, where her parents ran the Mount Assiniboine Lodge, the oldest backcountry ski lodge in the region. This idyllic setting laid the foundation for her love of cross-country skiing, which would eventually become her profession.
Renner's most notable achievement came at the 2006 Winter Olympics, where she and Scott claimed silver in the team sprint event. However, it was a selfless act by Norwegian coach Bjørnar Håkensmoen that stole the show. During the competition, a competitor stepped on Renner's ski pole, breaking it. Håkensmoen gave her one of his team's poles, allowing her to continue the race. Norway eventually finished fourth, implying that Håkensmoen's sportsmanship may have cost his team a medal. As a token of gratitude, Renner presented Håkensmoen with a bottle of wine, while Canadians responded with phone calls, letters, and even 7,400 cans of maple syrup to the Norwegian Embassy.
Renner's accomplishments extend beyond the Olympics. She won a bronze medal at the World Championships and boasts four individual podiums and two team podiums in the World Cup. Her highest World Cup season standing was 14th in the overall classification.
In 2010, Renner announced her retirement from competitive skiing, following her finish in the Women's 30 km Mass Start event at the Vancouver Winter Olympics. She reflected on her decision, stating, "I just left everything out there today... it was absolutely inspiring." Renner's remarkable career serves as a testament to her dedication, perseverance, and passion for the sport.
Raised in the picturesque Canadian Rockies, Renner's childhood was filled with the great outdoors. She is married and has a daughter, Aria, who was just three years old when Renner competed in her final Olympic event.
