Born on April 4, 1986, in Haiti, Bertin's life was forever changed when her mother, Mireille Durocher, a prominent lawyer and outspoken critic of then-President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, was brutally murdered in broad daylight in 1995. This traumatic event led to Bertin's exile in the Dominican Republic, where she grew up and learned Spanish and English, in addition to her native French and Haitian Creole.

She went on to study law at Universidad Iberoamericana UNIBE of Santo Domingo and Pontificia Universidad Catlica Madre y Maestra PUCMM of Santiago, and is currently a human rights lawyer. In 2010, Bertin entered the Miss Haiti Universe contest and won, using her platform to raise awareness about the devastating earthquake that had struck Haiti earlier that year.
