Born on September 22, 1929, in Quebec City, Canada, Garant developed an interest in music from an early age, thanks to his mother's influence. He attended the Sacred Heart of Jesus Elementary School, where he spent three consecutive years (1936-1939). The family's frequent relocations due to the Great Depression led him to attend schools in LAncienne-Lorette, Verdun, and eventually Sherbrooke, where he finished his ninth year at St. John the Baptist School in 1945.
During his studies, Garant developed a particular interest in the clarinet and later taught himself to play the saxophone in 1946. However, it was his dedication to learning piano that truly shaped his musical identity. Under the supervision of Sylvio Lacharit, one of the creators of the Symphony Orchestra of Sherbrooke, Garant began to explore composition. His early work, "Conte à" (1946), a piece for strings, flute, and clarinet, showcased his emerging talent.
In 1951, Garant pursued further studies in Paris, where he was mentored by Andrée Vaurabourg-Honegger and Olivier Messiaen. This experience significantly influenced his compositional style, blending traditional techniques with modernist elements. Upon his return to Canada, Garant began teaching, initially in Montreal, and later at the University of Montreal, where he became a professor of music.
In 1966, Garant co-founded the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ) alongside Jean Papineau-Couture, Maryvonne Kendergi, Wilfrid Pelletier, and Hugh Davidson. This organization played a crucial role in promoting Canadian contemporary music and providing a platform for composers to showcase their work. Garant's contributions to the SMCQ earned him recognition as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1979.
Garant's teaching career spawned a new generation of talented composers, including Walter Boudreau, Marcelle Deschênes, Denis Gougeon, Richard Grégoire, Anne Lauber, Michel Longtin, and Myke Roy. The Prix Serge-Garant award, created in his honor by the Fondation Émile-Nelligan, continues to acknowledge excellence in music composition.
